Ursa Major is proud to be among Built In’s list of the 2023 Best Places to Work for Colorado. The annual awards program honors companies of all sizes in large tech markets across the U.S.
“Ursa Major has put a premium on celebrating our employees’ individuality, building a culture of belonging, and seeking ways to constantly improve—all in an effort to attract top-notch talent,” said Joe Laurienti, Ursa Major founder and CEO. “We truly have the best team in the industry.”
Built In's list is generated using an algorithm that considers compensation and benefits. The program also weighs criteria like flexible work opportunities, programs for DEI and other people-first cultural offerings.
But to understand why people come to work for Ursa Major, it’s best to go directly to the source. We asked several employees what led them here, and their answers were as unique and diverse as the people themselves.
Kaitlyn Pitugnarongphor, Manufacturing Engineer
“When I first applied as an intern, this was the only place that guaranteed me a place in propulsion. The reason I came back as a manufacturing engineer was because of the people and the value Ursa Major puts on culture. I knew I would not be able to find a team of people so talented and knowledgeable, with an equal level of kindness, anywhere else.”
James McPherson, Propulsion Engineer
“For a good portion of my adult life I've known I wanted to work in rocket propulsion. I thought I'd end up at some random company, working on some random component in the corner of a room, forever.
“Ursa Major focuses on only one thing: making the best rocket engines. This company, this team, and our engines keep me excited to come in to work every day. In every conversation I feel that my voice is heard and that my input is taken seriously.
“I can't believe I get to be a part of something this unique and awesome.”
Beth Mills, Process Engineer
“Getting my dream job out of college on the systems integration contract for the International Space Station set a high bar for employers. It’s where I gained an appreciation for a next-gen vision and mission.
“When introduced to Ursa Major, I knew my skills would be of benefit. The company values seemed too good to be true—a company full of ultra-smart, driven folks (including rocket scientists) with humility? I felt like I did when Space Station came along at the beginning of my career and knew I could contribute to the next phase of aerospace. Ursa Major’s focus on propulsion solutions provides a reliable source of products for both public and private applications.”
Chase Trautman, Test Engineer
“I wanted a company that allowed me to wear a lot of hats and have a lot of responsibility early on in my career. I've always been the type to learn by doing, and I saw an opportunity at Ursa Major where I could make an impact and seek out involvement wherever I chose to help the team.
“During my time at Purdue, I was always playing multiple roles working in the propulsion test lab from design to executing tests, and I wanted a role and company where I was still able to do both. I also really enjoy how the size of the company allows you to be involved across the entire product lifecycle. One day I am working with manufacturing to get an engine on the stand, the next day I am testing that engine, and the day after that I'm working on design for test stand improvements. I get to experience the whole realm of engineering.
“Additionally, I wanted a place where culture and activities outside of work were not only allowed but encouraged. Bonus points—I'm a huge outdoor enthusiast, and it’s a nice benefit that Ursa Major happens to be headquartered in Colorado.”
